Bodhgaya: THE MAGNIFICENT, SANDSTONE MAHABODHI TEMPLE HERE, has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. The bodhi tree is surrounded by stupas and chaityas that bring to life various facets of Buddhism.a large circular stone with the Buddapada lies in a small shrine here.The sanctum houses a gilded statue of the budda in the bhumisparsha mudra (position) with one finger touching the earth, calling it to witness his awakening bodhgaya is quite an international town as monasteries, guesthouses, meditation centers and Buddhist temple of different countries abound here. Amongst them, the mahabodhi society of India and the old Tibetan Monastery are prominent.

The bodhgaya museum of the Archaeological survey of India is located near the mahabodhi temple. It displays antiquities excavated in and around Bodhgaya.Bodhgaya is well connected by air, rail and road. The narest airpot is Patna, at 112 kms, catering to both domestic and international travelers. Easy access to kolkata, Delhi and other neighbouring towns is possible from here.

 

Nalanda: Nalanda is the most renowned university in ancient India. Spread over an area of 14 hectares, it has the ruins of 11 monasteries and 5 temples. The mammoth brick-faced sariputra stupa is the imposing structure here and built over the remains of sariputra. A beautiful than temple and the nava anlanda mahavihara, a centre for research in Pali and Buddhist studies, are situated 2 kms away from the main site. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the Nalanda Museum, which houses some exquisite bronze figurines of the 9th and 10th centuries, as well as of the pala Dynasty.

Nalanda is 80 kms from bodhgaya and 90 kms from the state capital, patna.

 

Rajgir: Rajgir, ancient rajagriha (literally, the abode of kings) with its beautiful palaces, is distinguished by five hilla. Majestic mountain ranges guard this utopian city of auspicious places. The 38-metre high vishwa shanty stupa is the twenty-second in the chain of shrines built to propagate world peace. Created in marble, with niches bearing golden images of the Buddha, it leads to griddakuta – sanctified by the master’s presence. For I was here that the enlightened ONE DELIVERED THE LOTUS SUTRA AND THE PRAJNAPARAMITA. SOME OF THE other viharas in rajgir include the saddharma Buddha vihara, mardakuksi vihara, and jivakamaravana and venuvana vihara.

Rajgir is about 100 kms from Patna, which is also the closest airport.

 

Vaishali: Situated on the northern banks of the river Ganga, vaishali is where the Buddha preached the ratna sutra. it is also the site of a pioneering step for it is here that for first time women were ordained into the sangha as bhikshunis. Vihara, known as Buddha stupa, has revealed the extensive remains of a monastery, a large tank and the kutagarshala chaitya.vaishali is 56 kms away from Patna and is well connected by air, rail and road.

 



 



 

 

   Maharastra

 

 

Ajanta Ellora: a UNESCO World heritage site, the 30 extraordinary rock-cut caves at Ajanta fall into two groups. The early group belongs to the more austere hinayana phase of Buddhism.During this phase, the Buddha was not represented in the human form but only through symbols like the wheel of law or a bodhi tree. Mahayana period (5th-6th centuries AD), carved out during the rule of the vakataka dynasty, when artistic expression was more exuberant. The caves were inhabited by monks, artists and craftsmen, who used them as varsh-vatikas or monsoon shrines. Stylistically, there are two distinct types- chaitya grihas (prayer halls) and viharas (monasteries). The chaityas have vaulted ceilings and octagonal columns that divide the space into to central hall. This is where the votive stupa, the object of veneration, is found. The Mahayana chaityas also have images of the Buddha. The 34 caves at Ellora, hewn from a 2-km (1.3-mile) long scarpment, are among the most splendid example of rock-cut architecture in India. The caves at Ellora fall into three groups- Buddhist, Hindu and jain.The first nine are variation of viharas and are filled with fine Buddha figures, Boddha figures, bodhisattvas and scenes from Buddhist mythology.

Ajanta and Ellora are well connected by air, rail and road. The Deccan odyssey, a luxury train, also coves these dectination. Aurangabad provides a good base for visiting the Ajanta caves (100 kms away) and Ellora (30 kms away).

  Uttar Pradesh

 

Sarnath: It was here that the Buddha preached his first discourse in the deer park, and set in motion the ‘wheel of the dharma’. It is one of the most holy sites, for the stream of the Buddha’s teachings first flowed here. This site is also prominent because it is here that the budda encountered the five men who had been his companions of earlier austerities.

 

Kushinagar: Kushinagar is the place that the Buddha chose for his mahaparinirvana,or final exit from this earth. Commemorating this is a large brick temple cantaining a recumbent statue of the Buddha. The remains of ten different monasteries, sating from the fourth to the eleventh centuries, have been found here found here. Most of these ruins are now enclosed in a park, in the midst of which stands a modern shrine housing a large recumbent figure of the Buddha.

 

Sravasti: Sravasti was the capital of the ancient kingdom of kosala and sheltered the Buddha for 24 rainy seasons in the jetvana gardens. Its founder was the mythological king, sravast. It has some ancient stupas, monasteries and temple. The most convenient way to reach Sravasti is via Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, which is well connected by air and rail to all parts of India.

 

 

Kapilvastu Kapilavastu is the place where the Buddha spent most of his childhood it has a collection of archaeological excavations in the form of stone caskets.These contain relics believed to be that of the Buddha’s. Kapilavastu is situated 110 kms away from Gorakhpur in uttar Pradesh.
